: Most of the narratives of note and other information included in this paper have been published elsewhere with permission of relevant elders, such as in the book <i>Quiet Snake Dreaming</i> (Goodfellow,CitationRef removed) and papers and studies listed in the bibliography. I have permission from family members to mention the names of the deceased, namely Reverend Peterson Nganjmirra, Esther Managku and Miriam Nganjmirra. Where people cannot be reached to ask permission to include their names I have used subsection titles instead, for example, <i>Ngangaridj,</i> a man who stands in the relation of ‘son’ to me. Others have given permission but for a number of reasons I have chosen simply to use their initials.
