: This study was based on the MOE Teaching Practice Research Project (PED1090502) “Developing learner autonomy in the social dimension: Integrating project-based learning into an EFL writing course design to develop empathy.” This project applied for IRB review and gained approval (#CRREC- 109–111) from China Medical University & Hospital Research Ethics Center on July 29, 2020.
