: This study was based on the MOE Teaching Practice Research Project (PED1090502) “Developing learner autonomy in the social dimension: Integrating project-based learning into an EFL writing course design to develop empathy.” This project applied for IRB review and gained approval (#CRREC- 109–111) from China Medical University & Hospital Research Ethics Center on July 29, 2020. The participants agreed to sign the consent forms in which they agreed to participate and consent to any publications related to this project. The consent form was reviewed and approved by the China Medical University & Hospital Research Ethics Center.
