: The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences,Makerere University (Approval No. 2018/HD13/1863U). Permission to collect fish, surface water, and superficial sedimentsamples was granted by the Directorate of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Entebbe,Uganda (Permit No. Fish 01/108). Ethical approval was waived for this study because the work was conducted incollaboration with the Ugandan National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) of the National AgriculturalResearch Organization (NARO), which is legally mandated under the National Agricultural Research Act, 2005 toconduct basic and applied research of national and strategic importance in aquaculture, capture fisheries, and thewater environment. Sampling was undertaken with the support of staff of NaFIRRI where microplastics extraction andstereomicroscopic examination were also performed. The research was carried out in accordance with the requirementsof the approving institutions and applicable Ugandan national regulations (the National Agricultural Research Act, 2005).
