: Fukomys specimens had been euthanized as per UIC Animal Welfare Assurance Number D16-00290 (A3460.01), on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), NIH. Protocol number 23–202. The Heterocephalus specimens had been humanely killed by exposure to a rising concentration of CO2 followed by decapitation in accordance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 Amendment Regulations 2012, under project license PP5814995 granted to ESJS by the UK Home Office and approved by the University of Cambridge Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body.
