: The University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board waived the requirement for local ethics review as the data were collected by Statistics Canada, and use of the data is covered by the Canadian Statistics Act. In accordance with the Canadian Tri-Council Policy Statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2, 2018), Article 2.2, this research was exempt from ethics review because it relies on information that is “publicly available through a mechanism set out by legislation or regulation and that is protected by law.” (TCPS2, p. 15). All participants gave informed consent when their data was collected by Statistics Canada.
