Ethics approval: Ethical considerations play a major role in the use of machine learning in disease diagnosis. There are major privacy and consent issues associated with handling patient’s sensitive information, more so within settings where there is cross-institutional sharing of the same. There could be discrimination through biased machine learning algorithms. There is also the issue of accountability in cases where a machine learning system has a role in influencing a diagnosis, for instance, within a healthcare setting. There is a major need for a human-centered ethical approach in machine learning to help inform decisions without encroaching on medical professional responsibility.
