: The researchers adhered to the ethical requirements set by the Health Research Ethics Committee of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the University of South Africa. The ethical committee granted approval for this study on 10/03/2023 (2023/CAES_HREC/036). The Ethical Committee of the University of South Africa, in South Africa has granted approval for this study on 05/04/2023 (Ref no: 2023/CAES_HREC/036). This study was conducted in accordance with the UNISA ethics guidelines for the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). Permission to conduct the study was also obtained from the DoE’s head office in KwaZulu-Natal, the Pinetown District, and the principals as well as the school governing bodies (SGBs) of the selected secondary schools. Informed consent from parents/guardians and learner participants was obtained before any data collection procedures were conducted. The respondents were diligently informed of the research aim, purpose of the study and why they were invited to participate. Participation was voluntary, therefore there was no penalty or loss of benefit for non-participation. Moreover, the respondents were afforded anonymity by protecting their identity and dignity. Lastly, all data collected were encrypted to maintain the confidentiality and privacy of the respondents’ information throughout the research process.
: Permission was obtained prior the study from municipality and participants to publish the research findings and photographs of the study area. No participants were taken photographs to maintain anonymity. All authors and contributors of this study have provided their consent for the publication in the Discover Education Journal. They have reviewed the manuscript and agreed to its submission and subsequent publication. The authors confirm that the research presented in the manuscript is original, has not been published elsewhere, and is not under consideration for publication in any other journal.
