Ethics approval and consent to participate: All plant materials were obtained with appropriate permissions. Seed materials from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Nairobi, Kenya, were accessed under institutional guidelines for research use. Permission was also sought when collecting seed material from farmers. No special permits were required for the use of cultivated chickpea ( Cicer arietinum L.) varieties, as it is not classified as an endangered or protected species. Not applicable. This study did not involve human participants, human data, or human tissue. All experimental material consisted of plant seeds and plant tissue.
