: The seeds of the maize variety (Sammaz 15 (white)) used as test crop in this trial was obtained from the gene bank of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. The variety is widely grown among local farmers because of its high yielding and tolerance to <i>Striga hermonthica</i>. All the guidelines regarding its handling, storage and sowing practices as given by the IITA research ethics were followed during the trial.
