: The animals used in this study are owned by farmers who are participating in a community-based indigenous sheep breeding programme. The farmers were aware of the objectives of the study and the animals were sampled with their permission in the presence of a qualified veterinarian following the guidelines for the care and use of animals of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Resources, Peoples Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. No animal was injured during the sampling process. All the procedures described here were approved by the Institute Ethics Committee of the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
