: Sampling of buffalo employed standard procedures approved by the Uganda wildlife authority (UWA) and was performed by UWA staff. Cattle were sampled according to standard operating procedures of the Uganda Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The rabbits used for induction of sporogony in <i>T. parva</i>-infected ticks at ILRI Nairobi were handled according to a regularly implemented protocol approved by the institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) which adheres to internationally recognised standards.
