: American black bear miks were collected In 1984 by, and according to research protocols of, the Pennsylvania Game Commission (Oftedal et al. [CitationRef removed]). The cheetah samples were collected for purposes other than research (e.g. veterinary diagnostics) prior to this study commencing. Samples were subsequently made available to the researchers on an opportunistic basis and ethical review undertaken by the relevant groups determined the study to be low risk.
