: The present research involving fish was carried out in strict accordance with the guidelines of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA). The protocol was reviewed and approved by the institutional animal ethics committee of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, India. All dissection was performed under tricaine methanesulfonate (Sigma) (100 mg L<sup>−1</sup>) anesthesia and all efforts were made to minimize suffering.
