: A patent application entitled ‘Treatment of conditions of the nervous system’ (PCT publication number: WO2021078991A1) has been filed by the University of Leeds. The applicants and inventors are J.C.F.K., Richard Foster and James Duncan (all from the University of Leeds). The application is currently pending, having entered the national phase and reached the post-substantive examination stage. This patent application relates in part to the use of ECM-modulating therapeutic strategies, including the compound 4-methylumbelliferone, which is discussed in this Review. The inclusion of this compound in the manuscript is based on evidence from multiple peer-reviewed studies, including work from the Kwok laboratory and independent research by other groups in the field.
