: The study was approved by the Medical Institutional Review Board of the University of Bonn (accession no. 095/10 for single-unit recordings in humans in general and 249/11 for the current paradigm in particular), participants gave written informed consent according to CARE guidelines and in compliance to the Declaration of Helsinki. Subjects in our study were selected based on medical criteria and voluntary participation was ensured for each experiment. Selection of participants could not result in stigmatization, incrimination or discrimination. Participants’ safety was guaranteed by presence of medical personnel throughout continuous monitoring for the entire duration of the hospital stay. We have carefully considered research contributions and authorship criteria when involved in multiparty collaborations with the goal of promoting greater equity in research collaborations.
