: This study was approved by the Bioethical Committee of the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland (No. 1072.6120.333.2018 approved on 20 December 2018). The study protocol conforms to the ethical guidelines of the 1975 Declaration of Helsinki. It is an autopsied study. Samples were obtained during routine forensic medical autopsies performed at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jagiellonian University Medical College, Krakow, Poland. Our Bioethical Committee waived the need for consent from donors. We collected hearts only from deceased persons who did not express objection, when alive, and only if the family did not also express objection.
