The research was approved by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Human Research Protections Program (HRPP), which determined that the application was eligible for exempt status under 45 CFR 46.104.d, Category 2 (). Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects. All subjects were 18 years old or above. We followed best practices for conducting misinformation research58. For instance, given the experiment used real information, all participants went through a debriefing, in which they were presented with information about the experiment, the veracity of headlines, and an explanation of how veracity was determined for each headline.
