Ethics approval and consent to participate: This study was reviewed and approved by the Uganda Virus Research Institute’s Research and Ethics committee GC127/871, and ethical clearance was obtained from the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) SS1200ES and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ethics committee (LSHTM). In addition, we obtained administrative clearance from Kalungu and Masaka district administrators to conduct our study in their communities. After sharing detailed study information, we obtained written informed consent prior to data collection from each participant. Shared information included: the purpose of the study, risks, benefits, and duration of interviews. All this was done in light of the need to observe and adhere to ethical principles of; respect for humans as study subjects, do no harm, autonomy, and beneficence according to the Declaration of Helsinki.
