Experimental protocols and studies were reviewed by the Roslin Institute Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Board (AWERB) Committee. None of the experiments in this work were at the protected stages of development under the Animal Welfare Act (1986). For the experiments in Hungary, animals were kept and maintained according to general animal welfare prescriptions of the Hungarian Animal Protection Law (1998; XXVIII).
