Change Details: In the version of this article initially published, there were several errors in the Source Data files. In the Source Data for Fig. 4, the units of humidity ratio <i>d</i><sub>in</sub> and <i>d</i><sub>out</sub> were incorrectly given as g<sub>water</sub> g<sub>sorbent</sub><sup>–1</sup>; the correct units are g<sub>water</sub> kg<sub>air</sub><sup>–1</sup>. In the Source Data for Extended Data Fig. 6, the unit of Time was incorrectly given as h and the correct unit is min. In the Source Data for Extended Data Fig. 9, the subscripts of <i>T</i><sub>sorb,in</sub> and <i>T</i><sub>sorb,out</sub> were reversed. In the Source Data for the Supplementary Figures (Figs. S23 and S24), the units of humidity ratio <i>d</i><sub>in</sub> and <i>d</i><sub>out</sub> were incorrectly given as g<sub>water</sub> g<sub>sorbent</sub><sup>–1</sup>; the correct units are g<sub>water</sub> kg<sub>air</sub><sup>–1</sup>.
