: The study utilised secondary data extracted from recent country DHS datasets for six countries in Southern Africa. The DHS programme allowed for permission to use survey datasets. The datasets have no personal identities for research participants. All DHSs study protocols were approved by the respective country ethical review boards and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta.
: The DHS data collection procedures required informed consent from participants aged 18 and older. The survey protocol also required authorisation from parents/guardians for all participants aged 15–17 years before seeking accents from teenagers before an interview was conducted.
