Ethics approval and consent to participate: The Swiss StudentLife study was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Commission of ETH Zürich in 2016 (approval 2016-N-27). We followed a detailed informed consent protocol, including an information and consent procedure prior to each survey for active study participants. There was a separate informed consent procedure for the API Facebook data collection. Information about Facebook ties was only collected when both connected individuals had given their consent.
