Given the unprecedented pandemic situation and the restricted hospital access for substitute decision makers, waived consent was approved for a short, defined period of time (Research Ethics Board [REB] ID# 1670; issued March 20, 2020), and in keeping with the Society for Critical Care Medicine statement on “Waiver of Informed Consent in Emergency Situations”.
