: All animal experiments were conducted in strict accordance with the rules and guidelines outlined in the New Zealand Animal Welfare Act 1999. The majority of genetic and phenotypic data were derived as part of routine commercial activities outside the scope of formal committee assessment. For the remainder of data (i.e. RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and ATAC-seq functional data generated from mammary biopsy tissue), samples were obtained in accordance with protocols approved by the Ruakura Animal Ethics Committee, Hamilton, New Zealand (approval AEC 12845). These cows were situated on a research farm and permission was sought and obtained to biopsy mammary tissue from the owner of these animals (AgResearch, NZ). No animals were sacrificed for this study.
