: This study adhered to ethical guidelines for research involving animals and was approved by the University of Pavia as part of the research programme of the Doctoral School in Earth and Environmental Sciences of one of the authors (GC). The Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea, as the national authority responsible for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity, supported the project in the context of international relations (Ref. No. 0025849/PNM, 24 December 2015). Collection of fish specimens was carried out under the appropriate permits issued by the Ministry of Marine Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture of Eritrea, and the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (Ref. No. EBI71/2354/2016) in full compliance with institutional, national, and international ethical and legal standards.
