Ethical approval: This study involved no experimental or other manipulation of animals. Sampling included collection of field-discovered faecal matter only, for which ethical norms and standards according to South African guidelines were adhered to (University of the Free State Animal Ethics Research Committee permit number 08/2014/21). Permission for fieldwork and sample collection was also approved by relevant conservation authorities: Free State Department of Economics, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (FSDESTA; permit number 01/20893), Ezemvelo Wildlife (OP 1698/204), and iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
