Ethical approval: This study involves the freshwater mussel Unio crassus , an invertebrate species. Therefore, no specific ethical approval from an institutional animal care and use committee was required. However, as the species is listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, all field studies and sample collections were conducted in strict compliance with the national environmental legislation of Ukraine and bioethical standards for field research.
