: Blood samples from the affected calf and its dam were collected by a veterinarian during sampling for viral testing. Semen from the sire was bought from Bovec (Lentilly, France). Any invasive sampling was performed only post-mortem on the affected and control calves, after natural death; thus no ethical evaluation was required. Experiments reported in this work comply with the ethical guidelines of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). All the samples and data analyzed were obtained with the permission of their owners.
: Written informed consent to publish was given by the breeder of the affected calf.
