: All sampling was approved and carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations of the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC). Sampling of black robins on Hokorereoro and Maung’ Rē was conducted with approval from the Animal Ethics Committee at Charles Sturt University (permit number 14/043 to M.M.), of the New Zealand DOC and under the supervision of NZ DOC personnel (i.e., Erin Patterson, Dave Houston). Export permit (69248-DOA) for black robin samples was obtained from the New Zealand DOC. No other Ethics approval was required.
