Ethics approval and consent to participate: The study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Ethics and Welfare Committee of the University of Vienna (No. 2022-016) and the Kaimanawa Heritage Horse Welfare Society. Informed consent was obtained from all horse owners prior to the contribution of samples to this genetic study. All hair samples were imported into Austria following approvals (IDs: 2020 − 0.318.343, 2021 − 0.619.375; 2023 − 0.591.022) from the Federal Minister for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (Der Bundesminister für Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz).

As this study does not contain any individual person’s data in any form (including any individual details, images, or videos), the requirement for consent for publication is not applicable. However, informed consent was obtained from each horse owner for the participation of their animals in this study and for the inclusion of the resulting genomic data in this publication.
