: All animal use and ethical evaluation was approved at USAMRIID before starting any proposed animal studies by the Institute IACUC committee, which issued the following statement: Research was conducted under an IACUC approved protocol in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy, and other federal statutes and regulations relating to animals and experiments involving animals. The facility where this research was conducted is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International and adheres to principles stated in the 8th Edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Research Council, 2011.The bacterial strains used in the initial LD<sub>50</sub> study [see 29] were collected from other laboratories by our Institute’s Critical Reagent Program that collected these strains for the culture collection at USAMRIID. Prior approval or permission to use these strains for our studies was not required.
