Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study was approved by the Ethical and Protocol Review Committee of the University of Ghana Medical School [MS-ET/M.11 – P 3.1/2013–2014]. In addition, permission and approval was sought from the District Health Directorate and the traditional leaders of the respective communities before we commenced field studies. All participants signed a written informed consent form before recruitment into the study. Parents and guardians consented for their children below 18 years before they were enrolled into the study. All suspected cases were confirmed by PCR and patients who were positive for MU were later referred to their respective Community Health Centers for treatment.
