Need for written informed consent was waived in Ontario in accordance with legislation, and in Nova Scotia and Alberta via review by institutional review boards (IRBs). Use of Ontario’s data in this project was authorized via legislation; Sect. 45 of Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act sets out confidentiality and safety requirements for use of administrative data for research without additional research ethics board/IRB approval.
