: The study was approved by the Ethical Review Committee of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), and the Institutional Review Board at Boston Children’s Hospital and the University of Virginia. Informed written consent was obtained from the parents or guardians for the participation of their child in the study. Study staff were trained in the best ethical practices of clinical research, including approaches to the consenting of illiterate individuals, assessing comprehension of the study by the parents or guardians prior to their signing consent, and prevention of coercion in any step of the study process including recruitment, retention, study practices and consenting in the PROVIDE study (, identifier: NCT01375647).
