: All DEVANI specimens were collected between 2008 and 2010 in several European countries with approval by ethics committees and informed consent from all enrolled women and parents of infected neonates. The South African study (V9828OB) was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of the Witwatersrand (HREC140203) and the protocol was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02215226). Written informed consent was obtained by all partcipants. All methods used in this manuscript are in accordance with the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of the Witwatersrand and all ethics committee of each institution involved in the DEVANI project.
