: The ADRENAL trial was approved by human research ethics committee. Written informed consent was obtained from all study participants before randomisation and delayed consent was obtained from a legal surrogate. The NICE-SUGAR trial was approved by the ethic committee of the University of Sydney, The University of British Columbia and other participating institutions.Both trials were international, multi-centre randomised controlled trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine and conducted according to relevant guidelines and regulations in each jurisdiction and in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. The consent process for these trials followed all the legal requirements in each jurisdiction.
