: According to Danish legislation, Act ยงย 14 part 2, this qualitative study did not need formal ethical approval from the Scientific Ethical Committees []. All study methods were carried out in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration and Danish Act on Research Ethics Review of Health Research Projects. Informed consent was obtained from all subjects. Data were managed and stored securely at OPEN (Open Patient data Explorative Network) Storage (ID 22/6921) which was approved by the Region of Southern Denmark (Journal ID 22/44899).

: The first author, a PhD student and researcher in public health, conducted all the interviews. The other members of the research team were an epidemiologist, a sociologist, a psychiatric consultant, and a somatic consultant. The first and last authors participated in an introductory meeting with healthcare staff about the organization of healthcare in somatic and psychiatric facilities in one region before the interviews were performed.
