As the IPCI database contains observational data, the study was not subject to the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (WMO) and did not require medical ethics committee approval [ ]. GPs whose data are linked to IPCI are required to inform their patients about the use of their de-identified data for medical research. Patients can object to the use of their data and if this is the case, the data of these patients are not included in the research datasets.
