Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This project has received ethical approval from the ethics committee of the German Society of Nursing Science (no. 20–016).Written informed consent will be obtained from the people with dementia and/or their legal representatives. Additionally, study participants will receive oral information about the study before data collection. Since for people with dementia the ability to remember, to express oneself linguistically, and to relate the diagnosis to one’s own person can vary from person to person and from day to day, it must be decided in the context of each data collection and in each individual case in a joint discussion between the responsible nursing staff and the research team whether or not an interview can be conducted. If, however, before or during data collection, verbal or physical evidence suggests that participants feel uncomfortable or show a decreasing interest in the interview, an ongoing and here-and-now consent [CitationRef removed,CitationRef removed] will be used to check whether the initial consent [CitationRef removed] is still given. If this is not the case, the self-rating or interview will not be started or, by mutual agreement, will be terminated directly. Information about this procedure will be given before the self-rating or interview begins. Participating people with dementia may withdraw their consent at any time.Nurses who meet the inclusion criteria will receive written information about the study. The voluntary completing of the staff questionnaire will be considered as informed consent. Nurses who are going to participate in an interview or focus group (process evaluation) will receive written information and written informed consent will be obtained.
