Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Eligible participants received written information detailing the GERDA study by mail, which was followed up by telephone shortly after. If informed consent to participate was agreed, a home visit was scheduled and documented. The same information was provided to, and assent obtained from, relatives of participants with cognitive impairment. This study, including consent procedure, was approved by the Regional Ethics Review Board in Umeå (registration nos. 99–326, 05-063 M, 09-178 M, 2018–188-32 M) and the Ethics Committee of Vaasa Central Hospital (reg. Nos. 05–87 and 10–54).
