: Assessment of eligibility and informed consent were obtained up to 72 hours post-surgery. In cases where cognitive function was medically unresolved, decisions on inclusion or exclusion were made in dialogue with nurses and physiotherapists at the hospital and with the patient’s next of kin. Prior to obtaining written consent, patients received written and oral information and all participants gave informed written consent to participating in the study. All experimental protocols were performed in accordance with the Helsinki declaration and was approved by the Administering Institution of Lillebaelt Hospital, the Regional Ethics Committee of Southern Denmark (S-20200070) and the Danish Data Protection Agency (20-21854).
