: Following nursing home recruitment, residents and their next of kin received information on the study in writing or through meetings with nursing home administrators. Residents capable of understanding gave informed consent while, for those who could not, their next of kin was presented with the consent form in person or by post. Residents incapable of understanding and not having next of kin who could be contacted were included with passive consent, under approval from the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (No. 2018/2519) in Norway. This study was performed in compliance with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki and followed the CONSORT guidelines for the reporting of clinical trials.
