Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All DHS surveys are approved by ICF International as well as an institutional review board (IRB) in the host country to make sure that the protocols are in compliance with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations for the protection of human subjects. The 2016 Ethiopia DHS was reviewed and approved by the National Research Ethics Review Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Ethiopia and also by the Institutional Review Board of ICF, in the United States. Participants gave informed verbal consent before taking part in the survey and the procedure for verbal consent was approved by National Research Ethics Review Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Ethiopia and Institutional Review Board of ICF, in the United States. Before each interview, an informed consent statement is read to the respondent, who may accept or decline to participate. The DHS informed consent statement emphasizes participation is voluntary; that the respondent may refuse to answer any question, or terminate participation at any time; and that the respondent’s identity and information will be kept strictly confidential. Consent for publication was obtained from MEASURE DHS. The DHS Program is authorized to distribute, at no cost, unrestricted survey data files for legitimate academic research.
