Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Approval to conduct the study was obtained from Kenyatta National Hospital/ University of Nairobi Ethics and Review Committee (Approval no. P709/12/2017) and the Kenyatta National hospital administration. Written informed consent was obtained from the participants before the interviews. The participants’ information and consent forms were available in both the English and Swahili language versions with the participants choosing whichever language they were most comfortable with. For the quantitative component of the study which retrospectively reviewed medical records of children aged 1 to < 10 years, no written consent was obtained from the parents or guardians. However, all personally identifiable information was removed from the dataset for privacy protection.
: The quantitative component of the study involved retrospective review of medical records and data anonymised. The qualitative component had no identifying information for the participants. Hence, consent to publish the study findings was not possible or necessary.
