: Ethics approval or exemption from ethical approval was not sought, in accordance with WHO data policy, because the study did not involve experiments on humans, use of animals, or interviews of individuals in their personal capacity; participants in the global survey were duly authorized representatives of the governmental body with authority to release data on the policy, strategy, programmes and activities relating to management of public health pesticides of the country to WHO; participants were not asked to provide their individual views or positions. Through official letters, information was provided to all invited Member States about the purpose of the survey and how collected data would be used. Data collected were aggregated per United Nations Regional Group, so country anonymity was maintained. WHO routinely collects health statistics in the same way but does not seek informed consent of representatives of responding Member States considering that data sharing is a part of their routine responsibility (as opposed to the need for informed consent when individuals are required to participate in studies). In accordance with WHO data policy (ExternalRef removed), the data providers supply data to WHO in accordance with applicable national laws, including data protection laws aimed at protecting the confidentiality of identifiable persons; agree that WHO shall be entitled, subject always to measures to ensure the ethical and secure use of the data, and subject always to an appropriate acknowledgement of the country, to publish the data, stripped of any personal identifiers (such data without personal identifiers being hereinafter referred to as “the Data”) and make the Data available to any interested party on request (to the extent they have not, or not yet, been published by WHO) on terms that allow non-commercial, not-for-profit use of the Data for public health purposes (provided always that publication of the Data shall remain under the control of WHO), and to use, compile, aggregate, evaluate and analyse the Data and publish and disseminate the results thereof in conjunction with WHO’s work and in accordance with the Organization’s policies and practice.
