: Ethical clearance was obtained from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) ethical committee (Reference number MUHAS-REC-08–2021-835 of 25<sup>th</sup> August 2021). Permissions to conduct the study in Muhimbili national hospital campuses were obtained from the respective campuses (Muhimbili National Hospital-Upanga campus and Mloganzila campus).Written informed consent was obtained from all participants who participated in the study. Privacy and confidentiality was observed in all procedures by ensuring that the interviews were done in privacy (consultation rooms) and the questionnaires had no names instead they contained serial numbers for their identification. Patients who were to be contacted later for identification of their medications had their names matched to the questionnaire serial number and phone contact that were locked in an iron box and the key was kept safe with the primary investigator. Furthermore the data collection and handling of patients’ information was done only by medical personnel. All methods were carried out in accordance to relevant guidelines and regulations as stated in the Declaration of Helsinki.
