: Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences Research and Ethics Committee (SBS-REC) under approval number SBS-2023-447. A waiver of consent was granted by SBS-REC for the use of archived samples, given that verbal assent and parental/guardian consent for future use of samples had already been obtained through the Uganda National Biorepository’s broad consent process.The study was also registered with the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), registration number HS3679ES. Administrative approvals were obtained from the Uganda National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services (UNHLDS) and the Infectious Diseases Institute Core Laboratory (IDI Core Lab). This study was conducted in full compliance with the ethical principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki for medical research involving human subjects. Participant confidentiality and data protection were maintained throughout the study.
