: Ethics approval and informed consent were not required, as the described results were part of Ministry of Health/NPHL outbreak response and routine surveillance activities. The Ministry of Health Kenya considers these surveillance activities of public health importance, and therefore no ethics clearance by an IRB is required. As part of the county government, the County Medical Laboratory Coordinator briefed the sub-counties about the testing with the mobile laboratory. At sample collection patients were informed that their sample will be referred to the mobile laboratory for additional diagnostics and as part of national surveillance activities. Before sample collection verbal consent was however given. The study complied with the Declaration of Helsinki.
