: The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Review Committee of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL). Written informed consent was obtained from all participants or their legally authorized representatives. For patients unable to consent at the time of ICU admission, consent was obtained from next of kin, with re-consent obtained from the patient where possible before discharge. We adhered to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki when conducting the research.
