: The study population was derived from an existing study on Malawian children with severe anaemia and two control groups. Written informed consent was obtained from either a parent or guardian for all children. The ethics committees of the College of Medicine, Malawi, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom, approved the study.
